Glossary

  • ‘Pathy
The perception, broadcasting, or manipulation of a spectrum of mental activity, including thoughts (telepathy), emotions (empathy), primal instincts (lower empathy / primalpathy), or physical feelings (physical empathy). The term ‘pathy is used to refer to the entire spectrum, while more specific terms like telepathy are used to refer to a particular portion of that spectrum.
  • Ambient Energy
A mix of various types of energy present in a general area. This energy is not attached to one particular person or object, but is rather the byproduct of any energetic activity that has taken place in the area. This energy is usable as long as it is cleaned properly beforehand, but taking it internally is not recommended.
  • Analytic Overlay (AOL)
Occurs during the practice of psychic perception when the mind fills in the blanks with details based on what it analyzes would be logical to perceive rather than what is actually there. For example, if a person perceives “long” and “yellow”, their mind may jump to the conclusion that they are perceiving a banana and will show them the details that they would expect based on that assumption, when in fact the object was a long yellow pencil. This is caused by the mind’s tenancy to try to immediately organize sensory input into a familiar pattern that makes sense to it. It can take practice to simply observe input rather than trying to immediately interpret it. AOL can occur as a result of Frontloading. Also called Analytical Overlay.
  • Anchor
Phrases or movements that, after being tied to an ability or set of actions via the sub-conscious, trigger that ability or set of actions automatically when said or done. Also known as: trigger, mental program.
  • Aspects and Abilities
An attempt by the Psion Guild to categorize types of energy working abilities by how they are related to each other. Some have observed that energy workers tend to “major” in one or two aspects. Note that while these lists are detailed, they are not exhaustive–not all abilities are listed here.
Mental Aspect: Includes abilities dealing with sensing, broadcasting, and affecting thought, emotion, primal/instinctive feelings, and nervous system (physical perception, for example, perceiving or affecting what someone is physically seeing with their eyes or physically feeling–including pain–or less conscious physical perception like metabolic activity).
Physical Aspect: Includes abilities dealing with sensing and manipulating the physical world, including matter (solid, liquid, gas and plasma), electricity, electromagnetic radiation (light, microwaves, etc.), kinetic energy (sound, vibration, heat), gravity, magnetism, momentum, and time (sensing events in the past, present, and future, as well as affecting the speed of the passage of time in particular instances).
Psi-Energy Aspect: Includes abilities dealing with sensing and affecting psi energy, including its direction, velocity, density, intensity (how much of an effect is produced), generation (how much energy is produced by someone), capacity (how much energy is stored in one’s body/field), resistance (how conductive to psi one is), flow (the conduction of psi moving between two points), and type (changing the pattern of energy used for one ability into the pattern for another ability, or sensing which ability someone is using based on the pattern of energy).
Construct Aspect: Includes abilities dealing with sensing and programming energy to take on specific forms and functions, including shaping (the form of a construct), behavioral programming (how a construct behaves in given circumstances), abilities programming (allowing a construct to use certain psi abilities), and longevity (how long a construct lasts on its own).
  • Astral Entities
The native inhabitants of the astral plane, though some occasionally project to the ethereal plane (much like humans may project to the astral plane via astral projection). May range in type from the astral equivalent of bugs, to fully sentient, intelligent, and powerful beings. It is important to note that not all the inhabitants of these planes are friendly, and many are rather territorial. Since they are also more familiar with navigating and manipulating their surroundings, it can be very dangerous to cross them. It should also not be assumed that any sentient being one runs across is necessarily powerful, wise, or trustworthy. Just like on the physical plane, there are many entities who will lie if it suits them, claim to be more powerful than they are, try to be helpful even if they are not actually qualified to help, and be generally manipulative and opportunistic. As with everything having to do with energy work, it is important to always be careful and think everything through carefully for one’s self.
  • Astral Plane
The term used to refer to the collection of levels of existence that are based on what we know of as subtle energy. There are actually many planes and sub-planes that make up the astral, and they are completely non-physical–they do not correlate to any physical location. Intention is very potent here–one’s surroundings can be manipulated as easily as manipulating any subtle energy. Astral entities are the native inhabitants of these planes. Also called the Astral Realm.
  • Astral Projection (AP)
Moving one’s awareness and some portion of one’s energy (either part of one’s energy body or a construct “body”) to the astral plane. A full projection is similar to an OBE in that one experiences being completely outside of their body and completely present on the astral plane. In a partial projection, one is still peripherally aware of one’s physical body.
  • Aura
The roughly spherical or egg-shaped field of subtle energy surrounding a living body. Those who clairvoyantly see auras usually report that the aura contains colors related to the person’s personality or mental/emotional state. In the OEC, this is usually called a person’s “energy field” or simply “field”.
  • Biofeedback
Learning to control automatic sub-conscious physiological functions by practicing conscious awareness of them and learning to manipulate the subtle reactions from one’s body.
  • Birth-switch Theory
A theory of psi genetics based on observations made by a couple members of the Psion Guild. The theory is controversial and rather undeveloped. Though newcomers to the Psion Guild ask about it frequently, it has been all but dropped by most of the staff for being incomplete and for the most part irrelevant.
“Birth-switches” include: Non (developed or non-active), Partial, Born-on (aka Born-psi), Phoenix (aka Energizer, Generator, Trex’ata), Switcher (aka Imago), Hautè (pronounced “HAW-tay”, slang: Chosen Ones), Psi-Vamp, Banshee, Immune, Conductor, Repulsor, and Transmutate (a person who has been made into a Phoenix via a transmutation overlay). For more information, see this article.
  • Broadcasting
The sending of ‘pathic data to everyone in a general area, rather than to particular individuals. Similar to yelling to a crowd.
  • Center
To bring one’s full awareness back to one’s internal self. Usually involves focusing on the calm, quiet “center” of one’s being, and organizing one’s aura and mind, since disorganization in either can lead to scattered and unfocused awareness. Often used in conjunction with grounding.
  • Chakra
Used in multiple models to describe a junction point in the energy body where energy pools and spins like a wheel. There are many differences between the various models, but most agree on seven primary chakras along the midpoint of the body.
  • Channeling
Usually refers to a person allowing a ghost or other entity to speak through them via what could be called possession. The person may or may not be aware or remember what was said during the time the entity is in control.
May also refer to moving energy from one place to another using one’s body as a conduit, instead of simply moving the energy externally.
  • Charging
A basic energy working exercise that involves gathering subtle energy into one particular object, location, or body part.
  • Clairvoyance
Interpreting information gathered without use of the five physical senses in a visual way. It is also often used as a blanket term for interpreting said information as if it were received with a different sense. Clair- sentience, audience, alience, gustance, cognizance (feeling, hearing, smelling, tasting, knowing) are all less used terms to clarify. ‘Seeing’ an aura is clairvoyance and ‘hearing thoughts’ is clairaudience for example.
  • Cloaking Shield
A common type of shield that is programmed to mask one’s energetic signature and presence. Usually includes telepathic suggestion programming that broadcasts “I’m not here”, “I’m uninteresting”, “I’m not what you’re looking for”, or similar. While it won’t make a person physically invisible, it can make them a lot more easy to overlook and difficult to recognize.
  • Construct
Some amount of energy programmed to do something–for example, staying in a particular shape or behaving a certain way. Psiballs, shields, and servitors are all constructs. A good construct should be stable and able to maintain itself indefinitely apart from its creator. Also known as: thoughtform, servitor, egregore, psi golem, tulpa.
  • Direct Mental Interaction with Living Systems (DMILS)
The mental influence of a living physical body via psychic means. May include bio-PK or a type of telepathy directed at the body itself rather than at the person’s mind.
  • Divination
Using a physical object as a focus to aid in gathering psychic information, for example dowsing with a pendulum (also called pendling) or dowsing rod, palm reading, reading tarot cards, casting runes or dice, scrying, interpreting meteorological or geological information, or reading tea leaves.
  • Dreamwalking
Telepathically entering another person’s dreams. The dreamwalker may simply observe, or they may try to control the dream or interact with the dreamer.
  • Energy Manipulation
The practice of working with subtle energies and constructs. Includes things such as moving, re-patterning, filtering, flaring, shaping, and programming energy.
  • Entity
Generally used to refer to non-physical beings, such as spirits, ghosts, astral beings, etc.
  • Ethereal Plane
The level of existence encompassing the subtle energy that is closely tied to locations and objects on the physical plane. For example, the subtle energy present in a person’s body (their energy system and aura), and the ambient energies at various physical locations. Ghosts are present primarily on this plane. Some entities either exist on this plane or project themselves to it since it is easier to interact with the physical world from the ethereal plane than it is from the astral plane. Also called the etheric plane or the lower astral plane.
  • Extrasensory Perception (ESP)
Any form of perception outside of the five physical senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch). Includes all psychic forms of perception, for example, ‘pathy, precognition, remote viewing, scanning, etc.
  • Flare
To make subtle energy visible to the naked eye. Often used in the context of trying to flare psiballs.
  • Fluff
A term usually applied to ideas or claims that are insubstantial, improbable, exaggerated, unrealistic, and illogical. The label “fluffbunny” is usually given to those who have only a loose grasp of the theory of psionics or energy work, but who refuse to listen to anyone with more experience, instead making outrageous claims based mostly on what they have seen of anime and movies.
  • Frontloading
Telling or hinting at what a person should expect to psychically perceive, leading them to perceive what they expect to see rather than what is actually there. For example, a common mistake is to ask a question such as: “I tried to make a blue psiball, could you scan it to see if I made it right?” The person will then be more likely to see a blue psiball, even if it is not there or is made incorrectly. Can result in Analytic Overlay.
  • Ghost
The spirit of a previously physical being that has died but not yet moved on. If the planar concept is followed they appear most often on the ethereal plane as it is closest to the physical, though they can also be seen on other planes, though if they’re just moving upwards or staying around depends on the spirit. The term is also used for programming left during or after a death that resembles the deceased being but is not actually said spirit.
  • Ground
To send excess or unwanted subtle energy into the earth, similar to “grounding” an electric current. Usually used in conjunction with centering. “Grounded” is also used to refer to someone who is self-aware, reliable, reasonable, realistic, and not prone to being fluffy, scattered, or “having their head in the clouds”.
  • Highlight
To mentally “point” at something to make it more obvious to someone else. Usually involves focusing on the object and making the subtle energy around it “glow”.
  • Hypnogogic State
The transitional state of consciousness just before sleep. This deep state of relaxation can facilitate various experiences of psychic phenomena, such as telepathy, precognitive visions, out of body experiences, etc., as well as non-psychic hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and lucid dreams.
  • Link
An energetic connection between two beings that provides a more direct conduit for the transfer of energy or ‘pathic data.
  • Lucid Dreaming
Being consciously aware during a dream that one is dreaming, allowing one to manipulate what happens in the dream. Several methods are used to induce lucid dreams, including: Dream Induced Lucid Dream (DILD), Wake Induced Lucid Dream (WILD), Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream (MILD), and Visually Incubated Lucid Dream (VILD).
  • Meditation
Usually refers to the practice of quieting and/or focusing one’s mind. This is useful since subtle psychic input is more easily recognized when the mind is clear. Practices vary widely across cultures and traditions; however, most can be categorized as one of the following:
Concentration Meditation: the practice of focusing one’s awareness to a single thing, such as a candle flame or a mantra, and ignoring everything else. This form of meditation is usually internally focused and helps to calm a scattered mind.
Mindfulness Meditation: the practice of existing in the moment, and opening one’s awareness to all input without interacting with any of it. This form of meditation is usually externally focused and helps to bring awareness to things that are usually ignored.
  • Medium
A psychic who relays information from a ghost or other entity via telepathy or channeling.
  • Mirror Shield
A common type of shield that is programmed to reflect input rather than allowing it through. May reflect incoming input away from the shielded person, or, in the case of a reverse mirror shield, reflect output back at the shielded person. Note that what hits the shield is reflected, that is, it rebounds at the same strength back the way it came. If an attack were to be reflected by a mirror shield, for instance, it would rebound back to the person who sent it and affect them instead of the shielded target. When it comes to ‘pathic data, it is usually better to make a shield that immediately grounds whatever hits it, rather than reflecting it, since reflected ‘pathic data can echo and amplify, generally making the situation worse.
  • Natural
An informal term for a person who spontaneously develops and instinctively uses psychic abilities with little or no training. It is a common misconception that those who develop abilities without training are somehow superior to those who learn abilities from scratch (see: Non). There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and anyone (natural or not) who actively works at developing their abilities usually achieves a higher level of skill than those relying simply on natural talent.
  • Net
A group of energy workers specially linked together to share abilities and perceptions. May be temporary or permanent, but the longer the net stays linked, the stronger it becomes, and also the more difficult to break. It can be difficult for members to develop new abilities without adding someone with the ability to the net. There is also little to no privacy within the net because of the open links. Obviously, the decision to join a net should not be taken lightly, nor should joining be considered unless you absolutely trust all of the members.
  • Non
An informal term for a person with no instinctive psychic ability. Non-active Non refers to a person who has no psychic ability, and Developed Non refers to a person who began with no psychic abilities but learned them through practice.
  • Online Energy Community (OEC)
The collection of internet-based communities that focus on the learning and practice of psionics and energy work. May also refer to a single community.
  • Out of Body Experience (OBE)
Experiencing one’s awareness as being completely outside of one’s physical body. Shock at seeing one’s physical body that has been left behind is commonly reported. Differs from full astral projection and remote presence in that one’s awareness is still on the physical plane, not the astral or ethereal planes. May also be abbreviated OOBE.
  • Overload
Being overwhelmed by too much energetic or ‘pathic input. May result in both mental and physical symptoms including headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, confusion, disorientation, and difficulty concentrating. Grounding, centering, and shielding relieves many of these symptoms. More serious overloads occasionally result in minor damage to the energy system (“burnout”) which may require several days of rest to recover from. The energy system can usually recover on its own–such damage very rarely requires the aid of a healer. If the overload resulted from practicing too strenuously, stop practice for the day, rest, and eat foods recommended for psions and energy workers (see the Health section).
  • Phasing
The ability to make an object or one’s body physically pass through another solid object.
  • Physical Plane
The level of existence including physical matter and energy (physical, not subtle energy: for example, electricity).
  • Ping
A short, usually wordless telepathic message, usually meant to get someone’s attention. The equivalent or a server “ping” (hence the name), or a tap on the shoulder.
  • Precognition (Precog)
The psychic perception of future events. This perception may be through clairvoyant visions, just “knowing”, dreams, etc.
  • Probing
The active (thought not necessarily conscious) gathering of ‘pathic data from another person. May range from gently probing at the edges of a person’s field to invasive digging through their mind. Does not include passive perception of broadcast data. Many people accuse a ‘path of probing when they themselves are the ones ‘pathically “yelling”.
  • Programming
A set of organized intent directing a construct. Tends to be very similar to a computer program, and often structured in a “if ____ then do ____” format.
  • Psi
(pronounced “sigh”). Originally used to denote the unknown mechanism for psychic abilities in parapsychology experiments, this term was adopted by the OEC to refer to many things including psychic abilities in general (“psi abilities”) and the subtle energy used in energy manipulation (“psi energy”). Some communities use psi to refer to a specific type of subtle energy produced by the human energy system. This energy is light (not dense) and feels staticky. It is also called auric energy since it is found in the human energy field.
  • Psi Vampire (Psi-Vamp)
A person with a deficiency of subtle energy in their energy body who pulls energy from other people or their surroundings to make up for the deficiency. Some people report having always had this condition naturally (presumably from birth or childhood), others may develop it due to an injury to their energy body, and still others develop it by becoming addicted to pulling energy from other people. Sometimes spelled Psy Vampire or Psy-Vamp.
  • Psiball
A very basic construct, often used to learn energy working, made by programming some amount of energy to take the form of a ball.
  • Psion
(pronounced “SIGH-on”). A person who practices psionics.
  • Psionics
(pronounced “sigh-ON-icks”). The practice of metaphysical abilities such as ‘pathy, psychokinesis, and energy manipulation. Psionics tries to take a scientific and practical approach to metaphysical abilities rather than a spiritual approach.
  • Psychic
A general term for those who practice metaphysical abilities that are based in the mind, for example, ‘pathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis, etc.
  • Psychokinesis (PK)
Direct manipulation of the physical world by the mind (from the greek “psyche” + “kinesis”, literally, mind-movement). Also referred to as telekinesis (abbreviated TK, from the greek “tele” + “kinesis”, literally, distant-movement). Includes macro-psychokinesis (the visible movement of objects such as psiwheels, toothpicks, etc.), micro-psychokinesis (the manipulation of probability, for example affecting random number generators, computers, card shuffling, etc.), and some forms of healing.
Note: To specify psychokinesis on a particular type of object, do not just add the prefix to -kinesis, rather, add the prefix to PK or psychokinesis, or specify “psychokinesis with _____”.
Correct: bio-PK, pyro-PK, cryo-psychokinesis, psychokinesis with air, etc.
Incorrect: biokinesis, pyrokinesis, cryokinesis, aerokinesis, etc.
Those using the incorrect -kinesis terms are usually labeled fluffbunnies and ignored.
  • Psychometry
Physically holding an object and gathering psychic information about its history by sensing and interpreting the residual energy left by those who have handled it in the past. It is possible to gather current or future information about the last person to handle the object as well, by using the signature of the person left on the object as a focus for clairvoyance and/or precognition.
  • Remote Presence (RP)
Moving one’s awareness and some portion of one’s energy body to a different location on the ethereal plane. One is usually only peripherally aware of one’s physical body while RPing. Some people use this technique when scanning or doing energy work at a distant location.
  • Remote Viewing (RV)
The use of clairvoyance following a strict protocol to reduce the likelihood of false information shadowing actual received information. There are several types of remote viewing:
Coordinate Remote Viewing (CRV): Remote viewing using only a set of coordinates to give the practitioner a target. In Coordinate RV the coordinates are random as even GPS coordinates or similar could give the practitioner information that would shadow the viewing.
Ganzfeld Remote Viewing: Remote viewing done in a state of partial sensory deprivation to help minimize non-psychic input.
Associative Remote Viewing (ARV): Often used to aid in precognitive remote viewing. A question that can be answered yes, no, or other is decided on. Targets are then associated with each potential answer, for example, a pencil for yes, an apple for no, and a rabbit for other. Whichever object the viewer describes indicates the associated answer.
Beacon/Outbounder Remote Viewing: Involves another person in addition to the viewer who is assigned to go to the location to be viewed and write down a description of the area. At the same time, the viewer is told to describe the surroundings of the other person. This form of remote viewing uses a form of telepathy in addition to clairvoyance.

In addition, there are two methodologies for recording input that can be used within any of the types:
Controlled Remote Viewing (sometimes also abbreviated CRV): Methods designed by Ingo Swann for recording impressions received during remote viewing. As the name implies, these methods are more controlled and intentional than traditional ways (ERV) of gathering psychic data.
Extended Remote Viewing (ERV): The more commonly used free-form methods of receiving psychic impressions, generally involving relaxing, clearing one’s mind, and saying, writing, or drawing what comes to mind.

  • Retrocognition (Retrocog)
The psychic perception of past events. This perception may be through clairvoyant visions, just “knowing”, dreams, etc.
  • Scanning
The intentional use of clairvoyance to view (often remotely) another person’s energy system, or other energetic forms. Not everyone that uses scanning relies on clairvoyance–clairsentience appears to be the second most used, though there are a variety of other ways to interpret the information received.
  • Sensitivity
Usually refers to the level of one’s psychic perceptive ability or how much one is affected by psychic input. Someone who has a high level of psychic sensitivity may be called a “Sensitive”.
  • Shelling
Extra programming that is based on the concept of a “hard shell” on the outside of a construct that contains everything inside and prevents it from dissipating. While this kind of programming is not necessary, it can help those who are having a hard time making psiballs that hold together.
  • Shield
A psychic or energetic barrier around a person, object, or location. A shield is usually a subtle energy construct, programmed to keep something out (like energy based attacks or ‘pathic data), or in (for example, to keep one’s self from broadcasting to other people).
  • Signature
A person’s unique psychic “fingerprint”. Can be used to psychically find or identify a person and is usually present on some level in anything made by the person as well (constructs, links, etc.).
  • Subtle Energy
The non-physical substance used in energy work. The Chinese concept of chi is an example of subtle energy, as is the Hindu idea of prana, and the OEC’s idea of psi energy. While there are many theories about what subtle energy is, none of them so far are conclusive.
  • Telepathic Suggestion (TPS)
Using telepathy to plant a sub-conscious suggestion in a person’s mind. If done correctly, the person will either not consciously notice the planted suggestion, or they will assume that the thought is their own. In either case, if successful, the person will act based on the suggestion.
  • Thoughtform
Often synonymous with construct, this term is sometimes used to refer to the non-energy mental framework of a construct to which energy and programming are added.
  • Trance
Can refer to meditation aided by something external such as music or binaural tones. Can also refer to a “working meditation” where one is detached but still able to interact with the world.
  • Vamping
Slang for pulling subtle energy from another person or one’s surroundings. Though the name comes from Psi-Vampires who pull energy to make up for the deficiency of subtle energy in their systems, one does not have to be a Psi-Vampire in order to vamp energy. May also refer to a type of energetic attack which drains a person of energy.
  • Visualize
Picturing a thing or process mentally in order to focus intent. Visualization is essentially imagination + intent. What is being visualized is not necessarily what is actually happening–the visual serves simply as a metaphor.
